Our Story

Welcome

Welcome to First United Methodist Church of Downtown Lafayette, Louisiana. With a presence that dates back to 1845, First United Methodist Church is considered the oldest Protestant congregation in Lafayette. The initial church building was located at the corner of Washington and Congress Streets, and was actively used through 1924. Then, in 1925, our growing congregation relocated to its current location at the corner of Lee Avenue and Main Street. Later, in 1958, an educational wing was built to further the church’s ministry. Thus, for more than 175 years, First United Methodist Church has sought to be a place in the community where God’s love and grace are experienced by and offered to all.

Come dream with us as we continue our journey of “Putting Love First” by serving God and neighbor in the Downtown Lafayette community and the world.
